This is supposed to have been a happy accident when someone opened the wrong door and erroneuously vatted some 12 year old Glen Moray with some near 20 year old Ardbeg. The Book, A Peaty Provenance, quotes Hamish Torrie as saying the Ardbeg was meant to supply the, then current, "17", but unfortunately had to be creatively made into an alternative expression. Without this accident, we may have had another year's supply of the 17. The Serendipity is interesting for collectors, but I would have rather had more 17, as I'm sure Ardbeg, Glenmorangie and LVMH would surely agree.
I also read that Serendipity was offered to Committee members first, and a postcard was mailed out on April 1st, 2005 announcing this offering. Can anyone confirm if the Committee got first dibs? It would make sense since there was no other bottle offered to Committee members in 2005.
